August 4 — “Misery” by Big Troubles

Big Troubles

If you only listen to one song today, make it “Misery” by Big Troubles (2011, from the album Romantic Comedy).

Big Troubles is an indie pop quartet from Ridgewood, New Jersey. They’re young dudes. I’m guessing that they’re in their early 20s, even. They’ve already put out two albums, including a pretty impressive one last year, which came in at #21 on my favorite 22 non-Canadian records of 2011 list. It’s one of many, many high quality releases that Slumberland Records has put out in the last 24 months. They’re absolutely en fuego right now. I’ve spent the better part of this year writing post after post about that label. As always, I’ll encourage you to support that label with real dollars, and to support them directly.

Big Troubles say that they’re pretty big fans of 90s “alternative rock”, specifically the brit-pop stuff. It’s easy to hear the influence of Teenage Fanclub. After you buy this album, listen to “Time Bomb”, and you’ll get what I’m talking about with the Teenage Fanclub stuff.

I’m not going to mess around with backstory or jokes or anything like that. Just today’s song. If I’m honest, I don’t know any backstory, either on these guys or on the song.

This is that song

I love how sludgy and bass-y it is throughout the song. Even with the chiming guitar, it’s still got a thick, viscous sound and a Kim Deal-esque bass line.

I don’t know much about these guys other than that they’re from New Jersey, and they’re pals from high school. They have two co-leads of the band, and I can’t begin to guess which one of them has the lead vocals on this song.

You should order Romatic Comedy from the Slumberland Records web store here. While you’re in their web store, pick up a couple of the other “This is That Song approved” records. Everything there is good, and I’ll say again that they’ve got some enormous things on the way this summer and autumn.
