September 19 — “In My Head” by Dum Dum Girls

Dum Dum Girls

If you only listen to one song today, make it “In My Head” by Dum Dum Girls (2011, from the album Only in Dreams).

Dum Dum Girls is an all-girl indie pop quartet from Los Angeles. They formed in 2009 and have released two albums to date. They’ve got a new EP —End of Daze— coming out next Tuesday.

The lineup has changed a bit over the few short years that they’ve been in existence. One of the founding members was drummer Frankie Rose, who now has her own solo project.

Only in Dreams is a great album which was influenced as much by The Jesus and Mary Chain as it was The Ronettes. And we all know how much The Jesus and Mary Chain were into The Ronettes. The band is also very much influenced by The Ramones, and that is evidenced as much by their sound as by the fact that Dum Dum Girls frontwoman Kristin Gundred uses the stage name Dee Dee. Another inspiration is Iggy Pop, and that’s evidenced by the band name, which is a reference to the Iggy Pop song “Dum Dum Boys”.

The album was inspired in part by the death of Gundred’s mother and also by the fact that she spends too much time away from her husband, who is in the band Crocodiles.

Here’s one of my favorite songs from the album:
“In My Head” by Dum Dum Girls

One of the things that I like about it is that it makes a subtle (and maybe unintentional) reference to the brilliant Stone Roses song “I Wanna Be Adored”:

I can’t live without your warmth
I just wanna be adored

Since I don’t have much time today, I’ll leave this without any further commentary.

You can get Only in Dreams from the Sub Pop Records web store here.
