01.25.13 — “The Swan” by Cheatahs

If you only listen to one song tonight, make it “The Swan” by Cheatahs (2013, from the forthcoming release Extended Plays).

Cheatahs is a London-based indie band who released two EPs in 2012. They’re about to release a record called Extended Plays, which will be a compilation of the tracks on the Culled and SANS EPs. Look for that record from Wichita Recordings on February 5.

The band started out as a solo project for the Canadian-born multi-instrumentalist Nathan Ernest Hewett. He later recruited friends to fill out the full band. They’ve been hailed as one of the next big things, and they’ll be on tour this spring with one of the current big things on the London music scene, Veronica Falls.

A few weeks ago, I got something in the mailbag about Cheatahs’ new single “The Swan”, and I’ve finally made it the song of the night.

The song appeared on the SANS EP, and it’ll also appear on the forthcoming compilation issue.

I love that it’s got a bit of a mid-1990s feel to it. It’s just a little bit unwashed, a little heavy, pretty catchy, and really driving. I like it.

In March, Veronica Falls will be playing 17 North American dates to promote the release of their forthcoming album Waiting For Something To Happen. Cheatahs will play the first six of those shows.

You can download the SANS EP from the Wichita Recordings web shop here. There was an option to pre-order Extended Plays, but that option is no longer available. You’ll have to wait until February 5.
