Föllakzoid is a krautrock quartet from Santiago, Chile. When you think of contemporary krautrock bands, you think of Paris and Chicago and maybe London. You certainly don’t think of Santiago. These four guys who have been friends since childhood want to make everyone change their notions about when and where krautrock comes from.
I had never heard of Föllakzoid until on of my Music Geek buddies declared II to be one of his favorite records of the year so far. It’s my opinion that this has been an extremely good year so far, and I’m always interested in finding out what is blowing other people’s minds. Especially when I know that I have some common musical ground with said “other people”.
I still know virtually nothing about the band. I had to do a bit of research just to find out that they’re from Chile.
I’ll admit that the first time I listened to the album, I didn’t give it my full attention, and I didn’t give it a fair shot. I’ve listened to it a few times since then, and I really like it. I’m not sure if I want to lock it in as one of my faves of the year, but I do like it.
Here’s tonight’s song:
It’s super spacey and psychedelic, which isn’t normally the kind of thing that I fall for, but there are certain elements that are familiar to me. Certain not-quite-tangible elements that remind me of Wilco, or The American Analog Set.
For my money, this is the kind of song that’s excellent for night driving. Down country roads. With all the windows and especially the sunroof open. I don’t even have a sunroof. Also, to be fair, I’m pretty certain that this album was designed for the listener to do something very different from driving. I’m sticking with the “driving down country roads” thing, though.
