05.08.13 — “I Lost Again” by Free Time

Free Time

If you only listen to one song today, make it “I Lost Again” by Free Time (2013, from the forthcoming album Free Time).

Free Time is an indie pop quartet based in New York City. The band is fronted by Australian guitarist/vocalist Dion Nania. He played in some bands in his native Melbourne before moving to NYC in 2011. For a while, he played in bands with some other Australian transplants before starting all over last year.

After assembling a band, they quickly wrote and recorded an album, which he did the mixing on while he was back in Australia for a visit. The album was completed in December, and it’ll be released on May 28 on the New Jersey-based label Underwater Peoples Records. That label is also home to Tennis, Big Troubles, Mountain Man, and Real Estate, just to name a few.

I had never heard of this band until I got something in the mail bag about the forthcoming release. They’ve just released this song and an accompanying video to promote the release of the album. This is that song.

It’s got that mellow New Jersey Surf-infused pop sound that’s just a bit reminiscent of Yo La Tengo. It’s contagious. It’s bright and brilliant. It might just be an ideal song for winding down after a busy day of doing lots of summer-y things.

Here’s the video, which is brilliant in its simplicity.

The record will be coming out on May 28. You can pre-order it here. In the meantime, you can grab a free download of today’s song from the soundcloud page.

Free Time will also be touring the eastern United States this June.
