11.13.13 — “She, Untamed” by Mode Moderne

Mode Moderne

If you only listen to one song today, make it “She, Untamed” by Mode Moderne (from the forthcoming 2014 album Occult Delight).

Mode Moderne is a dark indie pop foursome from Vancouver. They’ve been around since 2008, but I had never heard of them until I got an email yesterday announcing the release of this single. By all accounts, they’re heavily influenced by The Smiths, and also by the goth, post-punk, and new wave movements of the 1980s.

They’ve released a couple of EPs and an album. Their sophomore long player Occult Delight will be released on January 21, 2014 via Light Organ Records.
With today’s song, it’s pretty easy to hear some Joy Division influence. I haven’t heard their previous releases, but we got an advance copy of the forthcoming album, and after giving it a quick listen, I think it’s going to be in heavy rotation around here.

Without further ado, this is that song:

The bass-driven music is so dark and thick. Then there’s the crooning style of vocalist Phillip Intilé. It’s sort of a strange mix. It’s cold and dark, but dripping with sweat. I think this will be a great record to get us through the winter.

You can pre-order Occult Delight from the Light Organ Records web store here.
