If you only listen to one song tonight, make it “Emelia” by Divepool (2013, from the “Emelia” standalone single)

Divepool is a shoegaze/surf pop quartet from Calgary. They formed in 2012, and they released three standalone singles last year. I’m not even sure how they popped up on my radar, but I wrote their name on a post-it note a couple of weeks ago, and it made me come back to this song. Again. And again.

I really love the way the fuzzy guitars and drums are recorded to sound distant and a bit murky, while Amanda Fuenzalida’s vocals are crisp and close. Actually, I think the vocals are miked a little too close. There’s something about this song that makes me think of some combination of Polly Jean Harvey and Guided by Voices. It also makes me think a little about the magnificent Baltimore shoegaze band Thrushes. And that’s always a good thing.

The name of tonight’s song, is, I presume, some tribute to the band’s drummer Emelia Lovink. It’s available as a free download from soundcloud, or at “name your price” from bandcamp.

And because we like music videos, here’s the one for “Emelia”:
