VEDAS

If you only listen to one song today, make it “Ruin” by VEDAS (2014, from the Exhume EP).

VEDAS is the Washington DC dream pop duo of Alex Lee and Andrew Monborne. They formed in the summer of 2013, and their debut EP Exhume was released yesterday.

Lee is a classically trained vocalist, and his style is reminiscent of Peter Silberman from The Antlers. Way up in the ether. And like Silberman’s Antlers, there’s some deep stuff going on here. Heavy emotional stuff that’s sort of masked by the lighter-than-air vocals. Love, loss, broken limbs. Those kinds of things.

Anyway, here’s today’s song:

There’s something really hypnotic about Monborne’s drum cadence. One thing that I really like about his drumming on this song is the very sparing use of cymbals. I think that’s his style in general. There’s something in the mix of this song (and another of their songs) that’s meant to sound like steel drums, and I’m not really a fan of that, but it’s subtle enough that it doesn’t bother me that much.

I’ve listened to this song and the rest of the EP a few times, and it’s a pretty impressive debut.

You can buy a digital copy of the EP from their bandcamp page.
