Young Boy

If you listen to one song today, make it “Secret Place” by Young Boy (2014, from the album Other Summers).

Young Boy is a synth pop/dream pop duo from opposite ends of the earth. Joseph Desler Costa is from Brooklyn. Alessandro Baris is from somewhere in Italy. The two are half-brothers who were separated when they were young. They recently connected and started working together remotely. Like a lot of bands these days, they sent a lot of stuff back and forth through the mail. And like a lot of bands who do that, they decided that there comes a time when you just have to work together in person. Joseph went to Italy, where they recorded the stuff that would eventually become Other Summers. The album was released last week via Saint Marie Records.

Joseph is also in the band L’Altra, which is also on the SMR roster.

The songs on Other Summers depend, in varying degree, upon analog synths. On today’s song, the synths come right away, and while there is some guitar, it’s mostly about the synths and drums.

I like the hushed vocals. I like the slide on the guitar. I like the MBV-esque “Ahhhhhh. Ahhhhhh” backing vocal. I’m usually not very wild about synth-heavy stuff, but I do like this. A lot.

You can buy your own digital copy of Other Summers from the Saint Marie bandcamp page, or you can buy a physical copy here.
