If you only listen to one song today, make it “A Fraud Abroad” by Girls Pissing on Girls Pissing (2013, from the Darwinning cassette EP).

Girls Pissing on Girls Pissing is a no wave/grunge/shoegaze/indie rock band from Auckland, New Zealand. They’ve been around for a few years and have, from what I can gather, released two albums. They also released a limited run cassette-only release called Darwinning last autumn. Today’s song is the featured track from that EP.

I really hate the name of this band. And it sucks that I hate their name because I like their music. I’ll refer to them as GPOGP for the rest of this post.

I had never heard of GPOGP until I got something in the mail bag several weeks ago from a label that deals almost exclusively in Australian indie rock. The email mentioned the obvious point that this is a band whose name will yield some Google search results that you really don’t want to click. But, the email suggests, if you can take a break from your pee porn, you’ll find something that’s “smothered with distortion and droned-from-the-bottom-of-your-guts vocals”. They also used phrases like: “weird, creepy, dark and sinister” and “lady voiced Nirvana”. I was intrigued. I clicked on the video, which you’ll see at the end of this post, and I really liked it.

This is that song:

Right away, it’s really 90s-esque with the sludgy, viscous vibe matched with the strong vocals from “Aki”. I’m reminded –ever so slightly– of Lykke Li. At least of the Wounded Rhymes record. I know she has a new record, but I haven’t even heard it. I’m reminded of a bunch of other things that I can’t quite place a finger on. Whatever it is, I like it. Someone somewhere compared GPOGP to “a Pere Ubu 45 rpm record played at 33⅓ rpm”. I actually really like that comparison.

It looks like unless you live in New Zealand, you can’t even download this song, but you can stream it as you wish.

And you can watch this video, which is pretty strange:
