Recapping Hopscotch17 Day Three

Today was the third day of the Hopscotch Music Festival, where I’ve been all weekend. You can read my coverage of Thursday’s fun here, and my coverage of my insanely busy Friday here.

On Saturday, I decided to give myself a bit of a break. I woke up, did my writing, and went back to sleep for a bit. I didn’t have anything that I was desperate to see at the day parties, so I thought I would get over there at a casual pace. I slept more than I thought I would, and as morning turned into afternoon, I started to think that I might skip the day parties altogether. I slept some more. Then I remembered that I didn’t even need to head over there for the City Plaza show or the Red Hat show. Instead of going down there just so I could wander around drinking, I relaxed in the hotel and watched the US Open Women’s final. I’m really happy that Sloane Stephens won. After that, I watched a little bit of college football before finally heading downtown fully rested and recharged.

Blois Hopscotch17

The first set I went to was Raleigh band Blois, who were kicking off the night over at Kings. I didn’t know anything about them. Just that they’re a dream pop band. There’s a little bit of electronics: some noise modulators and some other synth-like noise. I really liked them. I was reminded a little of Memoryhouse. At least the first Memoryhouse record.

Sound of Ceres

After their set, I walked over to Fletcher for Sound of Ceres. I didn’t know what I was getting into, but I was really pleasantly surprised. As I’ve said, I didn’t really do the amount of homework that I normally do, so I was kind of blind going in. I only knew that the Brooklyn by way of Fort Collins, Colorado band was electro/psych/experimental dream pop. On quick listen, Karen Hover’s voice reminds me a lot of the late Trish Keenan out of Broadcast. And the band’s music kind of reminds me of them, too. I didn’t know that this band features former members of The Apples in Stereo. I also didn’t know that their forthcoming album was produced by Alex Somers in his Reykjavik studio. That guy has produced some really great records by Sigur Rós, Julianna Barwick, and Briana Marela, just to name a few.
The Sound of Ceres set was something I’ve never seen before. They have a mesh screen set up on the stage, on which they project a three-dimensional laser display. Hover interacted with the display all night, and it was really cool. In the picture above, you can see the lasers dancing, and you can just see the silhouette of Karen Hover. I made a video, and maybe later I’ll upload it. I had no expectations at all about that band, and I really loved their thing. Their new album The Twin is coming out on October 6.


Next up was Beverly, over at Deep South. Over the years, I’ve only been to a few sets at Deep South, but they’ve all been memorable, including last year’s amazing set by Diet Cig. On records, they’re just a duo, but when they play live, there are five of them. At least there were last night. They were exactly what I was expecting. Energetic and fun. And they sounded great.

Cherry Glazerr

Next, I walked over to The Pour House for Cherry Glazerr. I didn’t know much about the Los Angeles band, but they were a bit heavier than I was expecting. It’s a band that I might have gotten really into if they had existed 20 years ago. I think the frontwoman of the band wasn’t even alive 20 years ago. There’s a lot of howling and heavy guitar punctuated with soft, melodic moments. For the first time all weekend, I needed my VIP wristband to get in. There were other advantages to the wristband, but that was the full house venue that I encountered. I only stayed for a few songs, and the line to get in was pretty long when I left.

I left one totally packed house for another totally packed house. I really needed to see Japanese Breakfast, though. I went to see them open for Mitski last June in Durham, but I didn’t really pay attention to the show. They were scheduled to play last year’s Hopscotch, but they didn’t make it. To be honest, I haven’t spent very much time with the new record, but I loved the 2016 debut record, and I was really excited about this set. When I arrived at the door for Neptune’s, there was one huge line for King’s and one for Neptune’s. I got a bit worried, but once again, my VIP wristband got me in ahead of the rest of the general admission folks. Neptune’s is one of the venues where you can’t see a thing if it’s crowded. The ceilings are fairly low, and they can’t raise the stage, so visibility is bad. A contributing factor is that Michelle Zauner is tiny. Even though I was only about five deep from the stage, I could barely see. I couldn’t get a decent picture. It didn’t matter, though. It was an amazing set. For the second night in a row, I ended my night at Neptune’s, seeing a band for whom I had very high expectations. For the second night in a row, I was very happy. They were on point, they were excited to be part of the festival, and they had the crowd jumping. During their last song, Zauner did a little bit of crowd surfing. I can never get enough of that kind of thing.

So far, this has been a great festival, and there are still a lot of highlights coming today. There are still a bunch of bands playing at Red Hat today, including my two most anticipated shows of the festival: “Mary Timony plays Helium” and Angel Olsen. I was a huge Helium fan, but I never saw them live. I never saw Mary Timony play solo, but I did see her with Wild Flag. She’ll be playing at 4:15.
I’ve only seen Angel Olsen one time, and it was absolutely breathtaking. Here’s the video I made last time:

I’m obviously looking forward to seeing her again tonight at 8.

June 15, 2017 — “Lake House” by Beverly


If you only listen to one song tonight, make it “Lake House” by Beverly (2016, from the album The Blue Swell).

Beverly is an indie pop/dream-punk band from Brooklyn. The front of the band is Drew Citron (vocals/guitar). She started the band a few years ago with the magnificent Miss Frankie Rose of Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls fame. With that lineup, Beverly released the 2014 album Careers, which was my #26 album of the year. Since then, Frankie Rose has left the band, and Citron has enlisted Scott Rosenthal (bass/guitar), who is better known as a producer who has worked with Crystal Stilts among others. I think he also had something to do with the technical stuff on Careers. Citron and Rosenthal are often joined by Kip Berman out of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, but he’s not an “official” member of the band.

Beverly is currently on tour supporting Berman and the Pains, who have a new record out in September. Speaking of September, Beverly will be performing at this year’s Hopscotch Music Festival in September. There’s a lot for me to look forward to this year, and of the “small print” bands, this is one of the first things that caught my eye the first time I looked at the lineup.

The band’s second record —The Blue Swell— came out last spring, and if I had bothered to make a list last year, it would have been at least in my top 20. It may not have done so well with the press, but I love it. This is one of my favourite songs from the album:

Our Favorite Albums of 2014 from 30 to 21

I’m in the middle of my year-end list. Or at least in the middle of sharing said list. The list about my favorite albums of 2014.

While I listed 26 albums in 2012 and 40 in 2013, I decided to list 41 this year. Why 41? No reason. It’s completely arbitrary.

I’m a really big fan of female fronted bands and I’m a really big fan of shoegazey stuff, so almost every album on this list is one, the other, or even both of those things. A lot of records that I like didn’t make the final list. A couple of records that wouldn’t normally be “my thing” made the list. This list is about full-length new release albums. No EPs. No compilations. No reissues. Nothing like that

The countdown started with numbers 41-31 and the countdown will continue with numbers 30-21.

Explosions in The Sky — Lone Survivor OST

30)Explosions in The Sky — Lone Survivor I don’t really like the idea of including motion picture soundtracks, but I really like this one, and I’m willing to bend my rule, just as I did last year with Mogwai’s Les Revenants, which is the soundtrack for the French language television show of the same name. This is the third time that the Texas post-rock band has collaborated with director Peter Berg. They provided music for the decent movie Friday Night Lights and the phenomenal television series of the same name. EITS hasn’t made a proper studio album since 2011’s Take Care, Take Care, Take Care, which was my ninth favorite non-Canadian album of 2011. They’ve been really busy, though. They did the soundtrack for last year’s movie Prince Avalanche, then this, then another soundtrack for something called Manglehorn, which was also directed by Prince Avalanche director David Gordon Green. Technically speaking, the Lone Survivor soundtrack isn’t an EITS album because it has four songs by another musician, but it’s still a really great album. Click on the artwork to buy it from Amazon.

Fear of Men — Loom

29)Fear of Men — Loom This Brighton, England lo-fi dream-pop band has been crushing it since 2010 with a long series of well-received singles, and a singles compilation last year. This spring, they finally released their much-anticipated debut record via Kanine Records. This is another in a line of great 2014 releases from that label. The members of Fear of Men say that they are as equally influenced by the fantastic Birmingham band Broadcast as they are by the 20th century French erotic writer Anaïs Nin. She of “Anaïs Nin and Henry Miller” fame. And speaking of Broadcast, it’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly four years since Trish Keenan passed away. Anyway, Loom is a fantastic record, and despite what they say, it makes me think of neither Broadcast nor Anaïs Nin. As a reference point, I’ll offer the Canadian dream-pop duo Memoryhouse. The Antlers — Familiars

28)The Antlers — Familiars On a snowy day in January 2010, a friend recommended The Antlers’ 2009 album Hospice to me, and I fell in love with it immediately. The Brooklyn indie rock band has released two albums since then, and this year’s Familiars is their fifth album overall since they formed in 2006. Peter Silberman has backed off just a skosh from his distinctive trademark falsetto on this record, which is their first since 2011’s Burst Apart, but even in a “guitar-based” band, this is all about his vocals. And his writing. The reason I bring up that bit about my friend recommending Hospice to me on a snowy day is that I remember it vividly, and it also gives me an excuse to reference a great line from one of the best songs on Familiars

Right when the blizzard ends, they throw a fucking huge parade
A great excuse for celebration of the mess they made
But when the streets get flooded, we know what proximity’s worth
Coz we’re already here in the same place when our phones don’t work

The Twilight Sad — Nobody Wants To Be Here And Nobody Wants To Leave

27)The Twilight Sad — Nobody Wants To Be Here and Nobody Wants To Leave This is the fourth album from the “perennially unhappy” Scottish indie rockers, and its October release meant that I didn’t get to spend as much time with it as I probably should. But I like it. A lot. No matter what that impossible to please reviewer from Pitchfork says about it. Seriously, that Ian Cohen dude hasn’t liked any album since Pinkerton. I’ve made extensive comments about that guy before, but I’ll leave it alone for now. Some people are calling it the best Scottish record of the year, and while I can’t get behind that claim, it’s my second favorite Scottish record of the year. Beverly — Careers

26)Beverly — Careers Beverly is the newest Brooklyn-based indie rock band fronted by the wonderful Miss Frankie Rose, who has released some really amazing records both on her own and as a former member of Dum Dum girls. Really, what can anyone say, and what superlatives can be offered that haven't been said and offered before? I really want to put this record higher on my list, but in terms of albums that I keep listening to again and again and again, I just can't put it any higher than this. Seriously, though, this is a brilliant record. If you like "doomgaze", if you like c-86 revival, if you like cuddlepunk, this is a record that you will love. Spotlight Kid — Ten Thousand Hours

25)Spotlight Kid —Ten Thousand Hours This is the third album by the Nottingham shoegaze band, and another of many spectacular releases by the Texas-based Saint Marie Records. This one came out in March, and spent a long time in heavy rotation at my house. It’s fuzzy and gazey and airy and delay-laden, and really beautiful. Remember that great song “Bit Part” on The Lemonheads’ masterpiece album It’s a Shame About Ray, where Evan sings “I just want a bit part in your life. I walk-on would be fine…”? That’s one thing, where the guy is okay with being that. On this album, there’s a song “A Minor Character”, where Katty Heath sings “You are such a minor character in my life”, and it’s not meant to make the guy feel fine about it. It’s cold, and it’s hurtful, and it’s magnificent. Click on the album artwork above to go back to the SMR web store, where you should already have a bunch of albums in your cart. Tiny Ruins — Brightly Painted One

24)Tiny Ruins — Brightly Painted OneThis indie-folk band is based in Aukland, New Zealand, but is fronted by Bristolian Hollie Fullbrook. This is their second full-length album, following 2011’s Some Were Meant For Sea. I had never heard of this band until they were announced as the support act for Sharon Van Etten on her recent North American tour. You may recall that Sharon Van Etten’s Tramp was my third favorite record of 2012, and I had very high hopes for this year’s Are We There. I was disappointed by the album, and I was completely underwhelmed by Ms. Van Etten’s portion of the show that I saw a couple of months ago. Spoiler alert: you won’t find Are We There anywhere in my 2014 list. On the flip side, I was completely blown away by the Tiny Ruins set that night. I had already purchased a digital copy of the Tiny Ruins album, but I went ahead and bought a physical copy of it that night. Because that’s the right thing to do. If you happen to live in the United States, the only way to buy this album without spending an arm and a leg is to buy it at a show. Even if you have to spend $40, it’s really worth it. The Rural Alberta Advantage — Mended With Gold

23)The Rural Alberta Advantage — Mended With Gold This is the third full-length effort from the Toronto indie rock/folk trio. It’s been said that they made an effort to make this album sound like their live shows. I’ve seen this band once in concert and I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be, but I’ve loved both of their previous records, so I don’t really know what to think of that assessment. One of many things that’s always said about RAA is that Paul Banwatt is a ridiculously good drummer. He’s technical, he’s got speed, and he’s got crazy creativity. Listen closely to their records, or see them live, and you’ll know what I’m talking about. Another thing that’s often said is that they’re like a Canadian-er, closer to earth, more approachable version of Neutral Milk Hotel. If Neutral Milk Hotel had a staggeringly beautiful woman in their midst.

The Capsules — The Long Goodbye

22) The Capsules — The Long Goodbye
This synth-pop/dream-pop band from Dallas may be new to me this year, but they’ve released five albums since 2002. They were signed to Saint Marie Records last year and released their new album via SMR this spring. Julie Shields’ unique vocal style is mesmerizing, and it’s easy to get completely lost in this über-dreamy record, which clocks in at just under an hour long. A Sunny Day in Glasgow — Sea When Absent

21)A Sunny Day in Glasgow — Sea When AbsentThis is the fourth album by the Philadelphia dream-pop/shoegaze band. They’ve been around for eight years, and they’ve gone through a ton of lineup changes with the only permanent member being frontman Ben Daniels. At one point, both of his twin sisters Robin and Lauren were in the band, but they both had real life to tend to, so they both left and were replaced by other female singers. While the lineup has changed quite a lot, what’s remained constant is the booze-soaked, fuzzy, sexy, dreaminess of their sound. The new album was released in late June via Lefse Records and was met with exceptionally good reviews. Click on the album artwork above to go to the Lefse web store. Also, enjoy this song:

06.18.2014 — “Honey Do” by Beverly


If you only listen to one song today, make it “Honey Do” by Beverly (2014, from the forthcoming album Careers).

Beverly is an indie pop duo from Brooklyn. The band is made up of the magnificent Miss Frankie Rose and Miss Drew Citron. By now, you know Frankie Rose as the former drummer of Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls. She went out on her own a few years ago, and her second album Interstellar was my 15th favorite album of 2012. Drew Citron is a member of the Frankie Rose band.

Beverly will be releasing their debut album on July 1 via Kanine Records, and they’ve been promoting the hell out of it with a couple of singles and videos. On Monday, they shared the song “Planet Birthday” over at Noisey. Today’s song has already been out there for a couple of weeks.

I got my mitts on a promo copy of the album, and it’s quite brilliant. It’s sure to end up in the top half of my year-end list. It’s a little bit dream-pop, it’s a little bit c-86, it’s a little bit doomgaze. It’s Frankie Rose at one of her finest moments. I listened to the album three times in a row yesterday morning, then again last night. I don’t do that very often.

I can honestly say that I love every song on the album, and this is one of them:

“Honey Do” by Beverly

One of my very favorite things about the song is the chorus. Everything is all fuzzy throughout the song, but in the chorus, everything drops out, and it’s just the clean vocal “Oh, Honey do.” I love it.
